Description
Dr. Sexton is a therapist at the ABTI and a professor at the George Washington University, teaching student therapists how to practice clinical psychology and apply the latest findings to improve practice. He has over 20 years of experience in psychotherapy and research, focusing on depression, anxiety, parenting, couples, chronic pain, and emotion regulation. He has also worked with individuals who are struggling with distress due to social media and video gaming.
Research and psychotherapy practice are arguably two different disciplines, but Dr. Sexton has a PhD in both, one in social psychology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and one in clinical psychology from American University in DC. He has worked on grants for NIH, NIMH, CDC, and the State Department studying various issues such as improving mental health diagnosis and treatment, and diversity issues in psychotherapy. Prior to private practice, Dr Sexton worked as a therapist at the Women’s Center, as well as several college counseling centers and psychiatric hospitals.
Dr. Sexton has advanced training and expertise in many empirically based therapies such as: Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Short Term Psychodynamic Therapy. He is integrative in focus, and can find an approach that is the best fit for you. Dr. Sexton’s interpersonal warmth creates a safe and caring environment in which to discuss difficult issues. He works with teenagers, adults, and couples.
